Kenya Independent Schools Association (KISA)
KISA Welcome to the page of the Kenya Independent Schools Association (KISA) , an association of approximately 1,000 independent, community schools serving low income households across Kenya, most of which are found in the informal settlements (slums) in major towns. Affiliation is ongoing and open to all private and community schools which are committed to the provision of quality education to children from households in the urban informal settlements as well as marginalised and disadvantaged areas.

The association is coordinated from the national office in Nairobi by elected officials whose mandate is to provide national leadership as well as offer support to the branch organs at provincial and district level to help them meet their objectives. 

The objectives of the association are identified as follows:
1. To create an enabling environment and platform for institutions serving the educational needs of children from low income households to discuss debate and pool synergy in providing this education;
2.  To lobby the government and other stakeholders for equitable treatment in the distribution of opportunities and resources in education with respect to children from poor households;
3.  To provide alternative non public quality education to children from low income households and therefore help the country meet the second millennium development goal on UPE by 2015, and
4.  To build the capacity of its membership with relevant and current skills in the provision of education and in dealing with the challenges of providing that education to children from low income households.

Our Programmes


In the past, KISA has been successful with some of the following programs:

ORIENT GLOBAL-SINGAPORE: We organized consultative forums geared towards education policy influencing with a culmination being a 3 day consultative workshop held from 29th October 2007 to 31st October 2007. The workshop brought together representatives from KISA members, NGOs, Ministry of Education Non Formal Schools (NFS) department and KISA officials attending.

We sponsored the East and Central Africa Regional Conference on The Importance of Non-Formal Education held in Nairobi on the 7th December 2007. The conference was graced by a representative of the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education.
UNICEF: Through concerted efforts of UNICEF, KISA and other stakeholders, in 2003 succeeded in pushing the Ministry of Education to recognize the non formal schools. This led to the Ministry setting up a Non Formal Education Unit with relevant personnel.

The KISA Scholarship Programmes were conceptualized to address the rising cases of children from informal settlements and low economic family backgrounds not accessing education due to “barriers to entry”. Some of these barriers to entry include requirements for uniform and the level of stigma associated with being in informal settlements, otherwise known as slums.

SFK Scholarship Recipients

Currently, KISA has two concurrent projects on this programme; Flower Garden Project funded by the Orient Global and Scholarship for Kids (SFK) funded by the Paul Norman Foundation.Through the projects, the children beneficiaries will continue to enjoy education that they would have otherwise forfeited in such of incomes to fend for their families.

Because of the scholarship, parents opt to continue retaining the children in school who would have otherwise been pulled out of school under the pretext of either lack of funds- if in private school or inferior education standards – if in public school.

With the realization of the disadvantages members are experiencing, the Association has rolled out a comprehensive programme to build the capacity of the members. The Association anticipates that these trainings will, in the long run, not only enhance the efficiency of the members, but also empower individual members with the skills and knowledge vital in engaging the government and other actors in terms of their service provision and/or advocacy roles. Some of the areas of capacity building include:

  •  Project Monitoring,Evaluation & Reporting
  •  Business Management
  •  Financial Control
  •  Leadership
  •  Resource Management 
  •  Frequent Induction of Teachers

Some of the organizations KISA has worked with include:
ORIENT GLOBAL -SINGAPORE: The purchase of Computers and IT equipment at the commencement of the project enabled the operations of KISA become more efficient and professional.

ROCKDALE FOUNDATION (BY GREY MATTERS CAPITAL) – U.S.A: In May 2008, the Gray Matters Foundation (GMC) commissioned a consultant to conduct research in order to better understand the value KISA brings to its members. The outcome of this research saw the foundation commission a consultant to assist KISA in Strategy Review. The exercise has seen the consultant meet and discuss with KISA members within their provinces and this culminated in a four day (December 8th, 08- December 11th, 08) Strategy development that brought a total of 30 members representing the various provinces covered by KISA. The process is on-going.

SCHOOL VENTURE – U.S.A: In August 2008, the Kenya affiliate of School Ventures carried a financial assessment of 17 schools identified for the pilot project and held a two-day Financial Management training workshop for the managers and finance officers of the schools between November 14th 2008 and 15th It hopes to assist the members’ access loans from corporate to enhance the facilities in the schools. 2008.

SAFARICOM FOUNDATION – KENYA: This foundation funded the material support and constructions in three KISA members in Nairobi after KISA recommended the schools. The 3 schools that benefited are Kangemi Youth in Kangemi, Reuben Baptist and Jobenfa in Mukuru.

Over the years, KISA has interpreted its statutory mandate to consider three things; membership and networking; capacity building; and policy engagement. Against this backdrop, since its change of name fro Non-formal Schools Association in 2006, KISA has been very busy. Besides the continuation of programs and activities geared towards realizing the its strategic priority of Networking and Collaboration, KISA has also been involved in various projects towards this. 

Humanitarian Development Summit 2007

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES-UK: The organization invited KISA in a high profile International Conference “The Humanitarian Development Summit 2007” in October 2007. The KISA Chairman & CEO made a speech to the delegates on the status of Independent Schools in Kenya. KISA shared the podium with various International Organizations and Corporate.
